Club-by-club guide to final week of Premier League transfer window

Gary Jacob: Mikel Arteta’s search for a forward who can play anywhere across the line is more pressing after Gabriel Jesus suffered a groin injury last week that is being assessed, while Gabriel Martinelli has continued his indifferent form from last season. Arsenal have looked at wide players in Germany — none of whom will be easy to sign — and maintain there is no interest in Ivan Toney, the Brentford forward.
Eddie Nketiah is the subject of interest from Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest, whose proposed deal for the forward has stalled, and Aaron Ramsdale is also expected to leave after the club agreed a fee with Southampton.
Charlotte Duncker: Villa have already had a productive window, bringing in seven players to add strength in depth as they compete in the Champions League, and ideally they would like to add more this week. Having missed out on João Félix, another attacker is still on the wish list, but sources distanced the club from a move for Raheem Sterling.
A couple of fringe players are expected to leave on loan and Jhon Durán was attracting interest earlier in the window, but Villa would only sell him if the right fee could be agreed.
GJ: The expected arrival from Chelsea of the Spain goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga would be among the most eye-catching of the club’s summer signings, which also include Evanilson replacing Dominic Solanke up front. Mark Travers, the goalkeeper, is among the players who could leave Andoni Iraola’s side before Friday’s deadline. Bill Foley, the American businessman who bought the club with partners in 2022, has a target of European qualification by 2028.
GJ: The question is whether a big club will make a low-ball offer for Ivan Toney. The forward is the subject of a bid from Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, where the transfer window shuts on October 6. His exit would leave Brentford lacking depth in attack and they have considered signing Neal Maupay for a third time.
The forward, 28, scored six league goals on loan from Everton last season. Gustavo Nunes, an 18-year-old winger, is set to move for £10million from Gremio. A left back is also probably needed, with injuries leading to Kristoffer Ajer playing in that role against Liverpool on Sunday.
GJ: Matt O’Riley’s arrival from Celtic for an initial £25million takes the club’s spending to a net £142million this summer. The Denmark midfielder joins Georginio Rutter, the forward who cost a club-record £40million when he signed from Leeds United, and Brajan Gruda, the midfielder who cost about £25million.
Jeremy Sarmiento, the winger, is set to join Burnley on loan and Billy Gilmour, the Scotland midfielder, is wanted by Napoli, who have made an offer potentially rising to £18million.

GJ: Three players could potentially arrive and more than 15 could exit. Chelsea have been in talks with Napoli over Victor Osimhen, but the west London club would prefer to sign the striker on loan while the Serie A side want to sell him.
Jadon Sancho, the Manchester United winger, is on a list of attacking players being considered and a centre back could join if Chelsea offload Trevoh Chalobah and Axel Disasi.
Sterling and Ben Chilwell have the highest profiles of the unwanted players who have been training away from the first team.
GJ: There is a dilemma of how hard to fend off Newcastle United’s bid to sign Marc Guéhi, when the centre back has two years left on his deal and is unlikely to extend it. Should the England centre back follow Joachim Andersen out of the club, Palace would need two defensive replacements.
Palace are set to sign Maxence Lacroix for £17million from Wolfsburg, one of two centre backs who could join before the transfer window closes on Friday. Palace are considering whether to raise their offer for the other centre backs, Tomás Araújo, of Benfica, and Trevoh Chalobah, who has been valued at £25million by Chelsea after being told he has no future at the club.
They are keen to sign another attacker and are interested in Sterling, the Chelsea winger, having previously looked into a deal to re-sign Wilfried Zaha from Galatasaray. They have revived interest in Eddie Nketiah, the Arsenal forward.
Paul Joyce: Take your pick on the positions in which Everton would like to strengthen — midfield, attack and full back — but with finances tight, Sean Dyche, the manager, has been tempering expectations. Neal Maupay and Mason Holgate will be allowed to leave, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin is in the final year of his contract and selling him now would be preferable to losing him for free next summer, providing there is time before the deadline to bring in attacking reinforcements.
GJ: Marco Silva wants a winger, after Willian’s contract expired at the end of last season, but has been struggling to persuade Rayan Cherki to leave Lyon since having a £17million bid for the 21-year-old accepted. The Fulham head coach also faces interest in Andreas Pereira, the attacking midfielder, from Nottingham Forest. Silva, who has spent a net £35million — helped by the £42million sale of João Palhinha to Bayern Munich — has said that Sander Berge and Sasa Lukic will be his holding midfielders.
GJ: Dara O’Shea became Ipswich’s 11th summer signing after his £15million move from Burnley, taking the club’s net spending to about £95million since promotion.
Armando Broja’s move from Chelsea stalled due to the forward having an achilles issue and Ipswich could offload Ali Al-Hamadi after Stoke City were among a number of clubs in the Sky Bet Championship to make an approach. The forward, 22, has scored four goals in 16 appearances since he joined from AFC Wimbledon in January. Freddie Ladapo, a forward, and George Edmundson, a centre back, are expected to leave.
CD: Steve Cooper has made it clear the club needs more signings this week and the hierarchy are working to get deals over the line before Friday’s deadline. An attacking midfielder and a forward are the priorities. Leicester hope to complete the signing of Bilal El Khannouss after a fee of £19million was agreed with Genk.
Central midfield is the only area of the pitch where they believe they have enough strength in depth, after the arrival of Oliver Skipp from Tottenham Hotspur. However, with the new manager looking for safety in numbers in all positions, anything could be possible this week.
PJ: Giorgi Mamardashvili, the Valencia and Georgia goalkeeper, underwent a medical in Spain on Monday to finalise a deal that could be worth up to £30million. He will become the first signing under Arne Slot, the club’s new head coach, although he will stay at Valencia until 2025.
It is an example of the long-term planning for which Liverpool were renowned under Michael Edwards, the former sporting director who now has an overarching role as chief executive of football for the club’s owner Fenway Sports Group. Richard Hughes, the new sporting director, said this window would be “opportunistic” for Liverpool and that remains the case.
CD: It was always anticipated that City would have a quiet window and last week’s re-signing of Ilkay Gundogan was an added boost after Savinho was confirmed as their first signing earlier in the window. While there have been discussions over another forward, after the departure of Julián Alvarez to Atletico Madrid, it seems unlikely at this stage that they will add a striker before Friday’s deadline.
João Cancelo is the most likely to depart after City accepted a £21.2million offer from the Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. However, the defender is yet to agree to the move. Joel Ndala is likely to leave the club on a permanent basis amid interest from AC Milan, Ajax and PSV Eindhoven, while the defender Josh Wilson-Esbrand is also likely to leave. There is also understood to be interest in Issa Kaboré, with City open to letting the defender go.
CD: United got most of their business done early with the arrivals of Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee, followed by the double signing of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich before the season started. Heading into the final week of the window they have a couple of loose ends to tie up, mainly the sale of Jadon Sancho, who hasn’t made the match-day squad for their first two games.
Erik ten Hag still wants to bring in a midfielder, with discussions ongoing with Paris Saint-Germain over Manuel Ugarte, while Scott McTominay is expected to complete a move to Napoli. Victor Lindelof is another player who is surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, but his injury means he would be difficult to sell.
Martin Hardy: Eddie Howe insisted on Friday that he wants Kieran Trippier to remain at the club and the experienced right back played well when he came on in the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth at the weekend. The club haven’t given up on the idea of signing Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace, having had multiple bids rejected throughout the summer.
CD: It has, so far, been a very measured window for Forest in which they have signed nine players that all appeared to stick to a plan. Nuno Espírito Santo has made it clear he wants more players in before the deadline and has filled the full back position by bringing Àlex Moreno in on loan from Aston Villa.
A deal for Nketiah broke down over the weekend so they will likely still look to bring in another striker this week, with negotiations continuing with Feyenoord over Santiago Giménez. A number of fringe players are expected to leave and Nuno hinted that Forest, as they always seem to be, may be involved in another frantic end to the window.
“There are so many things going on in the transfer window,” he said. “Surprise moves from all the teams.”
GJ: Two straight defeats and no goals so far from 24 shots, five of which were on target, have highlighted why Russell Martin wants to strengthen his attack. He previously tried to sign Armando Broja, the Chelsea forward who scored six league goals on loan during the 2021-22 season. Southampton have agreed to sign the Arsenal goalkeeper Ramsdale for a fee that could rise to £25million.
GJ: It is not uncommon for Tottenham Hotspur to make late moves in transfer windows and Ange Postecoglou has said he will need another forward if Richarlison leaves. The Brazil forward, 27, has ruled out accepting a move to Saudi Arabia but is unlikely to start many league matches, even if Solanke is out injured.
Although Spurs are well-stocked in midfield, there is scope to upgrade their No6 options, as Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma are better with than without the ball. Sergio Reguilón and Giovani Lo Celso are available and expected to leave as their contracts expire next summer. Real Betis have made an approach to re-sign Lo Celso, the Argentina midfielder sold to Tottenham Hotspur for up to £55.3million after an initial loan in 2019. Manor Solomon’s proposed move to Leeds United has stalled.
GJ: It has been proving difficult for West Ham to shift players, which is the priority after effectively spending some of next year’s budget this summer. The available defenders are Vladimir Coufal, Kurt Zouma, Nayef Aguerd and Konstantinos Mavropanos.
In midfield, Maxwel Cornet and James Ward-Prowse could exit. Coufal, Zouma and the forwards Michail Antonio and Danny Ings are all out of contract next summer. If one or both of Ings and Antonio leave, West Ham have already been offered Tammy Abraham as a replacement, although his wages at Roma are a problem. Carlos Soler, the attacking midfielder, is expected join from Paris Saint-Germain.
CD: Wolves have money to spend after selling Max Kilman and Pedro Neto this summer, and after their 6-2 hammering by Chelsea on Sunday Gary O’Neil made it clear that he needs reinforcements in his squad. A centre back and a winger are both on his wish list as they are yet to directly replace Kilman and Neto.
Burnley’s Luca Koleosho is of interest, while the 18-year-old Nantes defender Bastien Meupiyou is expected to sign this week but not as a starter. They had a loan offer for Ramsdale rejected by Arsenal and still retain interest in the England goalkeeper, but any further move would require José Sá to move on.
